As with many of the cities in Utah, Holladay can trace its roots back to the mid 1800's. 1847, in fact. That was when John Holladay and the Mississippi Company found the Salt Lake Valley. After a hard winter, settlers came back to the area and began to build homes. This became the first village established away from Salt Lake City. John Holladay, the original founder, was named branch president of the local church, and he then named the settlement Holladay's Burgh.

Holladay holds the distinction of being the oldest continually inhabited city in Utah. This is due to the fact that Salt Lake City was briefly abandoned in 1857. This sense of history is still prevalent in Holladay, although the city has matured and become a major player in the economy of Utah, and is home to over 20,000 residents.
