Originally known as South Cottonwood, Murray Utah is located about eight miles south of Salt Lake City. The Cottonwood name was due to its location between the Big & Little Cottonwood Creeks. The name "Murray" came from Eli Murray, a territorial governor who presided over the area from 1800 to 1886. As with many other cities, Murray was primarily an agricultural city, dedicated to farming and other agrarian trades.
The evolution to an industrial power came with the inception of the Woodhill Brother's smelter which was constructed in 1869. This began an era in which smelting was the primary industry in Murray. In recent years, real estate in Murray has diversified and birthed a multifaceted economy that has assisted the town in continuously prosperous development.
