One of the oldest areas in Salt Lake City, Sugar House has remarkably never produced any sugar. The name was given to the neighborhood by the wife of the mayor of Salt Lake City, Margaret McMeans Smoot. It was due to the construction of a sugar mill that was never completed because of problems with building materials. There was a time when it was proposed that the area be renamed "South East Salt Lake City" but that moniker was soundly rejected.
Sugar House (also sometimes spelled "Sugarhouse") is one of Salt Lake City's oldest neighborhoods. Established in 1853, six years after Brigham Young brought his Mormon followers into the Salt Lake Valley, the Sugar House real estate market has a long and storied history.
Named after a proposed (but never finished) sugar mill, the Sugar House neighborhood has a habit of bucking trends. Locals prefer to preserve and accentuate the heritage of Sugar House's real estate, rather than carve it up. Over the past ten years, residents of Sugar House have worked hard to revitalize their neighborhood.
Sugar House is home to the largest fireworks show in Salt Lake City - held on Independence Day in Sugar House Park. Sugar House Park is also home to an annual street fair. Once known as a seedy area, Sugar House Park is now seen as the neighborhood's jewel.
