West Jordan is one of the fastest growing cities in Utah, with a population that's nearly tripled in size since 1980. Now the fourth largest community in the state, West Jordan is a vital part of the Salt Lake City metro region, 18 miles southwest of downtown Salt Lake City.

The area's rapid expansion is best understood by looking at its individual neighborhoods, which often evolve from construction sites to thriving communities in the same year. The city's fastest growing areas are in the west end, near Utah State Route 111, which connects cities along Utah's populous Wasatch Front. Neighborhoods like Jordan Hills, Welby, and Copper Hills are in the midst of a construction boom as newcomers seek out a conveniently located residential base. Prices for new homes in West Jordan real estate are surprisingly affordable, with a wide selection of properties starting at under $200,000.

While the city has been largely characterized by phenomenal growth in recent years, West Jordan is also one of Utah's oldest communities. Its history begins with Mormon settlers in the mid-1880s, who saw striking similarities between the Salt Lake Valley and Isreal's Great Rift Valley - namely, the region's water distribution, which included a short river flowing from a freshwater lake into an inland sea. Named after the ancient waterway in Isreal, Utah's Jordan River flows north along the city's east border, while the Oquirrh Mountains lie west of town. West Jordan experienced a boom in its early days as a mining hotspot, and later a regional sugar production center.

Today, West Jordan is a major commercial center of Utah, with four major retail centers, including Jordan Landing, one of the largest mixed-use planned developments in the Rocky Mountain Region.
