Orem grew out of farmlands dotting the landscape north of Provo and east of Lake Utah, and features a city layout unlike many others in the state. Instead of city blocks and closely grouped houses, Orem real estate was planned around homesteads that once lined the territorial highway, now State Street. As farms sprung up throughout the area they were connected by rural roads, eventually leading to a mixed community of farms, commercial areas, and residential neighborhoods. Orem has grown from a regional agricultural center into a shopping and business hub for Utah County, but the city largely retains its original concept with many pockets of different zoning.

Orem's economy is now defined by several industries, most notably the high tech sector, where hundreds of people are employed by software manufacturer Giant WordPerfect Corporation. Founded by a graduate of Provo's Brigham Young University, WordPerfect has precipitated the startup of several additional Orem high tech and software companies. Orem is also home to a long-established steel producer, Geneva Steel Works, and Osmond Studios, which has helped bring the entertainment industry to town.
Orem is a mid-sized city, the sixth largest in Utah, and is located adjacent to Provo, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City along the Interstate Route 15.
