South Temple Street was originally called "Brigham Street" because of the South Temple location of Brigham Young's Mansion. South Temple has often been referred to as one of the most beautiful streets in America and 966 East South Temple has been considered one of its most beautiful homes. Its second owner was the mayor of Salt Lake City. Its present owner, a great-grandson of Brigham Young, has occupied and owned it for more than seventy years. This home is set on nearly one third acre of land, surrounded by trees and shrubbery, which provide amazing privacy for a city location. The stone patio has hidden gas lines which provide fuel for a gas grill and outdoor fire pit. A pond waterfall contributes a pleasant sound when entertaining. Inside you are surrounded by high ceilings and crown moulding, and specially designed, leaded cut glass windows. The staircase, original floors, and doors are quarter sawn oak. Two original wood burning fireplaces with oak and tile mantles have been preserved. One is located in the sitting room and the other in the master bedroom suite on the second floor. The original door hardware is copper. The kitchen is large and open, with original St. Charles cabinets. The adjacent family room was added in 1980. The lower floor includes a well-lit apartment with private entrance. On this same floor, there is also a large room ideally suited for a home office, recreation room or theatre as well as a second kitchen-like area with cabinets and a pantry. It is a perfect location for a second refrigerator. 966 East South Temple has always been a family home with an original carriage house, which has more than adequate space for two cars and a work space. The second floor of the garage was originally used for hay and grain for the horses, who pulled the carriages below. Now it could be repurposed as a workshop, office or storage. This home has been updated with new utilities. There are four hot air furnaces, three of which are 90% efficient. There is a tankless hot water heater, copper plumbing, a central vacuum and air conditioning. Square footage figures are provided as a courtesy estimate only and were obtained from an appraisal. Buyer is advised to obtain an independent measurement.
